Metropolitan Museum of Art, Copyist Program

During March and April 2025, I participated in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Copyist Program through the Art Students League with the artist/instructor Ricky Mujica.

I painted a copy of "A Gorge in the Mountains" by Sanford Robinson Gifford.  He is one of the few Hudson River Artists who actually lived in the Hudson River Valley.  Gifford was from Catskill, NY.  He lived across the Hudson River from Thomas Cole.

It was a great opportunity to paint in the museum.  The program was only 8 days, once a week for March and April.  I enjoyed reading about Gifford's life while I worked on the painting.  He fought in the Civil War, hiked the mountains in the Catskills and travelled to Europe, including London where he saw Turner paintings!  The Metropolitan Museum staff and Ricky Mujica were wonderful.
